A tough workout should be followed up with a protein-packed snack or meal. With 22-35% of its calories coming from proteins, lentils are ideal. However, with high levels of soluble and insoluble fiber, lentils are also great way to start your day. Soluble fiber will lower cholesterol, reducing the bad cholesterol that clogs arteries, and keeps you full for longer. Insoluble fiber helps to cleanse the bowels and prevent colon cancer.

Lentils are also chock full of folate and magnesium, which promote general cardiovascular health and improve blood flow, making sure that oxygen and nutrients circulate healthily throughout the body. They are also a great source of calcium, zinc, and iron.

Barley is another great superfood. A huge source of soluble and insoluble fiber, barley is an excellent choice for weight loss, blood sugar management, lowering cholesterol and improving heart health. It’s a great source of antioxidants, low in fat, and is full of vitamin B, selenium, iron, magnesium, zinc, phosphorous, and copper.

Mix up barley and lentils in the following recipe for an incredible source of nutrients!

Among the superfood phenomenon is salmon. Some people might be scared that salmon is contaminated, but eaten up to 2 or 3 times a week, the pro’s outweigh the con’s. This type of fish yields a high level of omega 3 fatty acids which your body needs…but can’t produce on its own. Omega 3’s promote healthy joints and skin, and reduce the risk of heart disease. High in protein, salmon is ideal for athletes to consume after a workout to help maintain and grow muscle mass. Protein also helps to maintain a faster metabolism desired by those who want to lose weight. Salmon is low in fat and calories, and a great source of Vitamin D, Vitamins B2 and B12, which have a positive effect on healthy bones and teeth.

It’s healthy, delicious, and versatile. Give this a try, and you’ll be back for more!

Directions

Can you say “tasty toasted tuna to go” five times fast? No? Well, instead you can say, “I’m going to make a balsamic tuna salad sandwich for lunch”.

Here’s why: tuna is incredibly dense with nutrients. It’s packed with protein, which makes it a great choice for a post-workout meal. It’s got a high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids that are anti-inflammatory, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and improve eye health. Tuna protects against many cancers, especially those in the ovaries, pancreas, and the entire digestive track. Since tuna is filled with potassium, iron, and iodine, it helps improve blood flow and decreases stress. This helps to lessen cognitive decline and reduce your risk of alzheimers. You won’t want to forget how great tuna tastes! Tuna also helps detoxify the liver, which in turn gets rid of your body’s toxins. I’ve said a lot of great things about tuna, but in fact, I may have missed a few of its health benefits, which means that it would be an excellent ingredient to add to your diet.

Try it for lunch!

If you haven’t already jumped on the avocado bandwagon, now’s the time. Avocados not only taste great, but are easily incorporated into smoothies, salads, sandwiches, and much more. They are the ultimate versatile staple, with a multitude of health benefits to boost!

Packing nearly two times the amount of potassium found in bananas, vitamins B, E, and K, high levels of monounsaturated fats, soluble and insoluble fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and carotenoids, avocados are one of the healthiest foods on the planet. They contribute to cardiovascular health, raise the levels of HDL (good cholesterol) while lowering levels of LDL (bad cholesterol that clogs arteries) in your body, suppresses appetite, and lowers the risk of colon cancer by cleansing the bowels. The vitamins in avocados are essential for boosting metabolism, maintaining the immune system and reproductive system, and enhancing bone and eye health.

Try the recipe below and see what the fuss is about!

Kale has stepped into the health spotlight as one of the world’s healthiest vegetables. One cup of chopped Kale contains as little as 33 calories, 9% of your recommended daily amount of calcium, 206% of vitamin A, 134% of vitamin C, and 684% of vitamin K. It is also a huge source of minerals like copper, potassium, iron, phosphorus, manganese, and sodium.

Kale is linked with anti-cancer, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. Other health benefits of this leafy green include eye- and bone-health promotion, lowering cholesterol and risk of heart disease. In the recipe to follow, strawberries are a main ingredient. This make it doubly as healthy. Strawberries are absolutely delicious, but beyond that, they’re full of antioxidants, vitamin C, fiber, and potassium. This helps prevent some cancers, lower blood pressure, boost immunity, keep away wrinkles and make your skin glow. They also help lower cholesterol and have an anti-inflammatory effect. Last but not least, strawberries are low in calories, fat-free, and low in sodium and sugar, making them a perfect pair for a Kale smoothie.

Try it out! I assure you, it’s delicious.

1 cup of non-fat or low-fat vanilla Greek yogurt

up to 1 cup of ice

Directions

1. Place the kale, strawberries and yogurt into your blender.

2. On full strength, blend the ingredients together until the kale looks like it is finely incorporated into the smoothie
